Meet the 13 campers who participated in the 4th annual High School Media Innovation Camp! Due to COVID-19, this year’s camp was held virtual.

Diego Cardenas

Mesa, Arizona

I took digital publications last year and I am currently in advance video production. For a personal project this year I created a sports blog as well. I am very interested in broadcast journalism because I have not done a whole lot with it but I think exploring these different types of areas well give me a better understanding on what courses I want to take in college. I think attending this camp will expand my horizons from what I already know while still really utilizing my skills.

Prerna Chakkingal

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

In South Fayette High School, we learned how to speak as a news reporter. We have morning announcements everyday. Therefore, we have to communicate in a way that is engaging and informational. This year in High School, I took a course called multimedia. This course helped me edit videos, make commercials and PSAs. I am very interested in taking Multimedia 2 next year to learn more advanced video editing and filmmaking.

Drake Du

Copley, Ohio

While I do not know which exact career I intend to pursue, I know that I wish to enter one that allows me to hear and amplify the voices of the unheard and the voices of others in marginalized communities. As the founder of the national student-led organization End the Panic, I have designed multiple social media infographics for our Instagram page to help bring awareness to issues that impact the LGBTQIA+ community. In this capacity, I am also responsible for having crafted our organization’s signature “brand” as it relates to our graphic design.

I am ‘tech junkie’ who is very interested in the latest technology and software, fascinated by the various developments on how to communicate and get information.Technology, specifically Artificial Intelligence and the algorithms surrounding AI will be integral in the Strategic Communication of media in the future

Preston Fu

Saratoga, California

I have been a reporter and editor for my school’s
print-online hybrid newspaper, The Saratoga Falcon,
for the last three years. I wrote a computer program
that would measure the accuracy of online news
sites and volunteered at UC Berkeley’s Goodly Labs.
There, I worked on Public Editor, an online editing and
review system to assess the credibility of news articles
and organizations. I also designed “Headline,” a gamified
news source that incentivizes COVID-related education
through trivia.

Arnav, Gupta

I have been a reporter for The Highlander for two years now. Apart from that, I have been an online news editor and copy editor for one year. I am also one out of four social media managers for our Instagram page, where I review and edit posts until we feel they are eligible to be posted.

I am part of my school’s [cdstv], and have written, edited, and produced segments for the broadcasts on YouTube that are sent out to the whole school. I hope to do something related to media in the future.

I am a student journalist pursuing my passion through my school’s news website, amadorvalleytoday.org, and newspaper “The Amadon.” I’ve spent the last year climbing the ranks at AVT to become Editor-In-Chief, and have spent that time writing stories, producing segments, and creating podcasts. My work has been recognized in competitions such as the Journalism Education Association’s  NHSJC competition and the Yale Daily News Symposium.

I used to write and publish articles, such as opinion pieces, news, and reviews of various media for a (sadly long defunct) website. My school also did a news broadcast which I was the anchor of.
